Like any traveller, there are some must-do things when visiting a culture rich country such as Cambodia. Relishing local cuisine is a certain way to indulge in Khmer culture. Here are five “must try” dishes when visiting the Kingdom of Cambodia. (With a few weird tastes thrown in)

Beef Lok Lak

A foreigner favourite and available at most local eateries, Lok Lak is a stir-fried meat dish served with fresh tomato, lettuce, cucumber, and a side of rice topped with an egg. Completed with a lime and Kampot pepper dipping sauce.

The prized signature dish is suited for any individual taste. Fish Amok is a creamy fish curry made from local coconut milk and palm sugar with a touch of ginger and lemongrass. The curry is usually made from scratch to ensure a fresh and unique flavour. Served in a banana leaf bowl for a throwback into the past of this amazing dish.

Green Mango Salad

Fresh Cambodian salads are frequently paired with a grilled or fried dish and can produce quite a kick. Green mango salad is a zesty packed dish consisting of sliced green mango, fresh chillies, cucumber, fish sauce, shallots, pepper, and a finishing touch of mint.

Nom Plae Ai

Nom Plae Ai

A tasty and extremely cheap dessert. Nom plae ai is a soft glutinous rice flour ball filled with palm sugar and topped with coconut shavings. This famous dessert is definitely a treat for any traveller with a sweet tooth.

Kampot Pepper Crab

Kampot Pepper Crab

Known from the coastal town of Kep, at this crab market right on the beach, you can select your pick as they lift the crab rings out of the ocean water. It’s then prepared right in front of your eyes, served with pepper sauce and devoured with your bare hands, enjoyed with an ice-cold Cambodian beer.

Some unusual mentions

Balut (fertilised duck embryo)
